After a careful deliberation by a review committee, Northville Public Schools officials have chosen not remove the book Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl The Definitive Edition from the middle school reading options.

How repressed do you have to be to feel that Anne’s descriptions of her body are “pornographic”? Here is a young woman honestly investigating what is happening to her body. Young women today would probably be comforted knowing that other teens before them dealt with similar changes, questions, sensations, etc. I read Anne’s diary as a soon-to-be senior in college and was reassured by her questions and reflections. Young women have so few places to learn about their bodies without the extra societal lens that sexualizes them. Anne’s diary is a refuge.nne

I absolutely agree that we need to remember Anne Frank not just as a gifted young writer or as an icon, but as a human. She was a young woman experiencing something overwhelming, scary, and foreign (something millions of people are actually still experiencing), but she was also a daughter who quarreled with her mother; a sister who felt overshadowed by her older sister; a young woman discovering her sexuality; a student exploring languages, math, science, art. Would she have liked Justin Bieber’s music? I don’t know. Maybe. She liked the radio broadcasts that the Annex residents could listen to, quietly, at night.

But I think that question is beside the point. It’s like asking what the Founding Fathers would think of the US today. They lived in such a different time and had a different frame of reference, and what does it really profit us to live by what they would have thought was right? They’re not here now. We can use their ideas and creations as guidance, but we also need to forge our own path. Wondering if Anne Frank would have been a ‘belieber’ is similarly beside the point. OK, she was a young teenager, Bieber’s main demographic, but what does it matter if she were a ‘belieber’ or not? What insight do we gain from that conversation? Let’s focus on Anne’s humanity and her incredible writing. Let’s continue to learn about the Holocaust and the genocide that’s happening today, right now, so that we can combat it and the prejudice that initiates such horror.

Maybe Anne would have been a ‘belieber.’ Maybe not. Anne seemed more concerned with her writing, with the desire to travel and meet people. Maybe if she were alive today she’d be the editor of her school newspaper. Maybe she’d pedal her bike through her neighborhood with her friends. Maybe she would dance to some Bieber on her iPod. The point is that we cannot know. Anne is gone, and all we have are photos, her diary, testimony from friends and family, and a scrap of film footage. Speculation is diverting, but learning about Anne and exploring her impact is more meaningful and has a greater possibility for positive change.

while the museum entrance is the building on the right, the actual house is the one with the green ground floor, second from the left.

both rebecca and i were insistent on going to this museum when we were in amsterdam and we weren`t afraid to take our time. it`s small, but it`s definitely not a place you rush through. we had heard that there would be a line and were told to go early or late. we decided to go first thing in the morning and arrived at around 9:15 (the museum opens at 9). and boy, was there a line. we waited for just over a half hour, but honestly, i wouldn`t have been bothered waiting longer because just the idea of being able to step into the place where anne frank went into hiding boggled my mind. i remember reading the book in grade school and the profound effect it had on me. i even tried starting a diary (that endeavor didn`t last very long but her story stuck with me). you`re kind of required to walk around slowly since it`s like a line procession but everyone seemed to respect the place and want to take the time to look around and read the diary quotes in the exhibits and see the pictures she glued to her bedroom wall.

it was kind of ironic. the fact that hundreds of us were piling into a secret hiding place for seven people. how loud our steps were on the creaking staircase, when we knew they had to be absolutely silent. how we were eager to walk into their tiny space when all she wanted to do was escape. they went into hiding because they different from someone`s beliefs of normal, yet people of every ethnicity, age, race, country were all lined up to visit this house. it all just seemed strangely poetic.

i also liked seeing how many different covers and languages and versions there were of anne frank`s diary in the gift shop. there was even a graphic novel adaptation. yet it remains one of the books that most people i know have read. surprisingly, rebecca hadn`t read it yet but she plans on reading it this summer. it`s the kind of place that makes you want to read the entire thing again now that you`ve actually seen the location.

it`s also the quietest museum i think i`ve ever been to (at least until you exit the house and enter the additional rooms) as everyone just kind of walks around knowing what occurred and the mood remains solemn, as it should.

the museum was super informative and really well put together and i particularly enjoyed the videos that they incorporated into the collection, the one of mr. frank talking about reading his daughter`s diary after the war still sticks with me.

on the list of places that i`m glad i got to visit this year, this museum was definitely one of them.
